John simply chose to reach a generation on another level, and as far as his statement about the Beatles being more popular than Jesus, this was designed to shock the whole world, and to make everyone realize this pop culture thing is getting out of hand.
And yes, Christianity will go, because the true message of Christ had nothing to do with religion! If you truly are with Christ Jesus you would know his most fearsome enemies were the chief captains of religion, the Sanhedrin.
